Palms

Adonidia
- "Christmas Palm"
- Slow grower averaging between 12 to 15 feet tall. Single trunk work great in tigher areas planted 5 to 6 feet away from structures. Multi-trunk need more room to spread out properly.
- Zone 10 is the best for this plant.
- Excellent self-cleaning features as when fronds are spent, they fall off by themselves.

Areca
- Slow to moderate growers for sun or shade and can reach heights of 15 to 20 feet.
- Position arecas 3 to 6 feet apart for a hedge-type planting. Keep at least 4 feet away from structure when planting near them.
- In warm areas of Zone 9B that border 10A, you can use an areca in a protected spot. Zone 10 is the best to use for this plant.
- Moderate self-cleaning features, however would consider trimming yellowed or browned fronds every once in a while.

Arenga
- "Dwarf Sugar Palm"
- Slow-growing that can reach an average height of about 8 feet tall and 8 feet wide (in shade) to 15 feet wide (in the sun).
- Cold-tolerant palms that can thrive in Zones 9B and southward of Florida.
- Does well in the sun, however prefers partial to full shade for a deep green color.

Arikury
- "Parrot Beak Palm"
- Slow grower that can reach to about 10 feet tall.
- Cold hardy to Zone 9B and grows in sun or shade, however prefers partial shade.
- Though not considered self-cleaning, they rarely require trimming of spent fronds. When trimming, leave about 3 inches of stalk to keep the spiky look of the trunk.

Bamboo
- Grows slowly, clustering and spreading habit but not invading
- Can grow up to 7 to 10 feet tall but usually grows up to 7 feet with regular maintenance
- Zone 9B is good, however grows best in Zone 10
- Does not like standing water, best with water-retaining soil

Bottle
- Has few fronds but long and graceful
- Able to grow multiple in one spot
- Slow growing palms that could end up about 10 feet at maturity, however maturity can take many, many years but most average 5 to 7 feet tall
- Zone 10B is the best for this plant.
- Self-cleaning is not a feature but this palm grows very slowly so requires less maintenance

Cat
- Looks similar to the areca palm
- No visible trunk, cluster of fronds
- Slow growing palm that reaches 6 to 8 feet tall in a rounded form, tolerates sun or shade, however shadier locations are best
- Zone 10 is the best for this plant.
- Requires regular watering but not soaked, plant with organic peat moss or top soil in the hole to help roots retain moisture

Lady
- Slow growing palm that reaches an ultimate height of about 8 to 10 feet.
- Prefers shade over sun, however can be planted in either or.
- Moderately cold tolerant, best grown in Zone 10 or in Zone 9B in a protected area.
- When damaged by winter elements, new trunks will usually appear to replace the old ones (although it takes a while).

Pygmy Date
- Does not take up much room, can be planted 3 to 5 feet close to the house or pool as this palm grows straight up
- Slow growing palm that can reach to only about 12 feet
- Zone 10 is the best for this plant.
- Low maintenance, old fronds and occasional seed pods will form a brown "petticoat" under the greenery that would need to be trimmed off now and then

Spindle
- Slow growing to about 20 feet tall.
- Performs well in sunnier locations, however may be planted in partial shade.
- Moderately cold hardy, does well in Zone 10 or in warmer areas of Zone 9B with protection.
- Plant at least 4 feet from the house to give fronds room to spread out.

Windmill
- Slow-growing that generally reach heights of 10 to 12 feet.
- Cold tolerance that can extend as far north as Zone 8 and won't show any winter damage.
- Prefers watering twice a week in summer and once a week in winter to keep the leaf tips from browning
Large Palms

Canary Island Date
- Slow grower that can grow up to 40 feet tall
- Zone 9 and south is best
- Self-cleaning is not a feature so regular maintenance is necessary
- Plant at least 10 to 15 feet away from the house or other plants/structures

Foxtail
- Fast grower that reach heights of about 30 feet. Because the fronds are large, keep at least 8 feet away from structures and further for multi-trunk variants.
- Zone 10 are best suited for this plant. Areas of Zone 9B that closely border Zone 10 work with usual winter temperatures.Â
- Excellent self-cleaning features where the frond will fall off by themselves.

Ponytail
- "Elephant Foot Tree"
- Slow growers that can eventually grow to 30 feet tall, however takes a very long time
- Moderately cold-tolerant and works well in Zone 9B with protection from freezes
- Does well in sun to part shade

Queen
- Fast growers that can reach a height of 40 feet. Best to keep at least 10 feet away from structures and 4 to 5 feet apart from others.
- Plant does well in Zone 9B that border 10A.
- Mild self-cleaning features, dead fronds take longer to fall off on their own. Requires frequent maintenance.

Royal
- Grows at a moderate speed up to 80 feet high. Keep away from structures by at least 8 feet but spaced between each other 8 to 10 feet.
- Zone 10B and placed in full sun locations, Zone 10A for warmer areas.
- Excellent self-cleaning features, never have to trim trunk area.Â

Sabal Palmetto
- Official state tree of Florida and South Carolina
- "Cabbage Palm" due to the way it grows at maturity
- Slow growers that reach up to 65 feet tall
- Cold hardy up to Zone 8, however prefers hot and humid summers
- Does have self-cleaning features to where the dead fronds will fall off on their own

Silver Bismarck
- Slow grower that reaches to 30 feet or more and each thick, fan-shaped frond can reach 10 feet in diameter
- Prefers Zone 10 but can grow in Zone 9B
- This palm does not feature self-cleaning, however grows slowly so trimming off old fronds will not happen frequently
- Requires a planting area of at least 15 to 20 feet in diameter

Sylvester
- Slow grower that reaches to an ultimate height of 40 feet tall, can feature "diamond cut" along the trunk
- Thrives well in Zone 9 as this palm is very cold hardy
- Browned fronds would be trimmed as needed, not often as the palm grows slowly
- Plant about 5 feet away from the house or other plants/structures for best results

Washingtonia
- Fast grower that can grow up to 100 feet tall, however not all grow at the same speed and rarely grows taller than the landscape
- Very cold hardy palm, can grow even in Zone 8 very well
- Browned fronds would need to be trimmed off often to avoid a "hula skirt" appearance
- Plant at least 6 to 8 feet away from the house or other plants/structures
Shrubs

Allamanda
- "Golden Trumpet"
- Moderate growers that like full to partial sun and do best in Zone 10
- Can grow to able 4 to 5 feet based on preference while mature, 3 feet while young
- Keep 3-4 feet apart from most structures and plants

Azaleas
- 3-4 ft when young and best kept around 4-5 ft once matured. Space these at least 3 ft apart
- Rated for zones 9B, or areas of 10A that borders 9B
- They come in a varitey of color and are very cold hearty
- Can be planted in full sun or full shade, though they keep a fuller look when in some sunlight
- Low maintenance and one of the few which can tolerate "wet feet" (overly water saturated soils)

Bird of Paradise
- 4-6 ft tall with about the same width
- They do best in zone 10, though they can be container grown in zone 9B as to be moved indoors during cold snaps
- Space about 3 ft apart to give room to fan out
- Will grow in full sun but best in partly sunny or partly shaded areas
- Drought tolerant but best to give them regular irrigation while avoiding "wet feet"

Crotons
- 2-3 ft tall with same amount of spacing between them (2 ft spacing for smaller Crotons)
- Rated for zones 9 and 10 and can be planted in full sunlight to partial shaded areas
- Low maintenance and best kept out of overly saturated soil
- Moderately drought tolerant and need to be covered during overnight frosts

Hawaiian Ti
- Variety of heights, slow grower
- Spacing can be close but for the Black Magic Cordylines they should be kept about 3 ft from other plants
- Best rated for zone 10, for zone 9B its best to keep potted to be placed indoors for cold weather
- Best placed in areas of bright shade but most can do well with more light, typically morning sun
- Low maintenance, protection from wind can help them from becoming shredded
- Moderately drought tolerant but over-saturation can turn the tip of the leaves brown

Hibiscus Bush
- 4-6 ft tall and should be spaced about 3 ft apart
- Comes in a variety of colors and flower shapes, and does best in zone 10
- Best kept in full sun to partly sunny areas
- Low maintenance but requires regular irrigation, too much or too little can make them look scraggly
- These plants can be hurt by cold weather so take precautions when that time come

Indian Hawthorne
- 2.5 ft tall and 3 ft wideÂ
- Plants should be spaced about 2 ft apart
- Moderately drought tolerant once established and very cold hearty
- Very low maintenance, water regularly while giving it time to dry between cycles
- Can be planted anywhere from sun to partial shade.

Variegated Ginger
- Moderate grower that can grow from 3 to 6 feet tall and 5 to 8 feet wide.
- Does best in Zone 10, however, in Zone 9B, they can either grow in a container to bring indoors during cold weather or planted in a protected area.
- Prefers to be in part sun to part shade areas as too much sun will curl the leaves.
- No trimming is needed other than removing dead leaves or pruning for size during warmer weathers.
Hedges

Gardenias
- 4-5 ft tall x 4 ft wide, Â although Dwarf Gardenias only grow to about 2 ft
- Give about 3 ft of spacing between them, but for the Dwarf Gardenias they only need 2 ft
- Best in zone 10, may be placed in full sun to partial shade
- Moderate maintenance, need to be placed in low alkalinity soils to reduce nutritional problems, bugs also love this plant so treatment may be necessary

Gold Mound
- 2.5 to 3 ft tall, space 2.5 to 3 ft away from structures
- Does best in full to part sun
- Water regularly in a well-drained area
- Blooms tiny lavender flowers
- Usually found in Zone 10 areas

Japanese Boxwood
- 2-3 ft tall and plant with 2 ft of spacing to grow into a low hedge with same amount of spacing from the house
- Low maintenance and trimming depends on how manicured you want it to look, though it is a slow grower
- Regular watering with time to dry between cycles
- May be placed in any area from full sun to full shade

Loropetalum Plum
- 3 ft tall but can grow larger
- Placed about 3 ft apart with about 2 ft or more from house (same as walkways)
- Low maintenance but water regularly without overly saturating soil
- Grows at a moderate to fast rate
- Placed in sun to partly sunny areas (too much shade makes the color fade and grow more leggy)

Podocarpus
- 5-7 ft or larger in height and usually planted as a hedge
- Spaced about 3 ft apart, keep around 2.5-3 ft from house and around 4-5 ft from walkway or driveway to allow room for maturity
- Low maintenance but grows at a moderate rate
- Sun or shaded areas
- Drought and cold tolerant

Tibouchina
- 15 ft tall but can be maintained as a hedge
- Able to plant around 3 to 4 feet away from structures, preferably out of winter wind areas
- Occasional trimming as necessary, regular watering without overly saturating soil
- Partial shade/sun, not too much sun
- Grows at a moderate rate, prefers warm zones
Ornamental Grass

Aztec Grass
- A cold-hardy plant that grows at a moderate rate to about 12 to 18 inches tall and gets a white flower spike.
- Prefers a part shade location that has regular irrigation but don't keep it overly wet.

Liriope
- "Lilyturf"
- Moderate growing grass-like plant that can go between 18 to 24 inches tall.
- A cold-tolerant plant that does well in Zone 9B or Zone 10.
- Water regularly but with time to let the plant dry out a bit between waterings.

Mondo Grass
- "Monkey Grass"
- Slow growing grass-like plant that can get to about 12 inches tall, the dwarf variant only grows to 6 inches tall.
- Very hardy plant that will last what seems like forever, prefers a location with some afternoon shade.
- Regular irrigation is a must but with enough time for the plant to dry out a bit between waterings.

Muhly Grass
- A small grass that can grow to about 3 feet tall, prefers full to partial sun, cold-hardy, and salt-tolerant.
- In Autumn, this place produces fluffy pink to purple flower stalks that can reach up to 5 feet tall.
- Best planted 24 to 36 inches apart from each other to provide a great scenary.

Zebra Grass
- Known for their "stripes" - horizontal cream or yellow markings on a silvery/green grass.
- Grows to about 6 feet tall and wide, and produces coppery-pink plumes in late summer.
- Does best in full to part sun areas, cold-hardy plant.
- Plant should be spaced at least 6 feet away from structures and paths.
Trees

Bald Cypress
- Fast grower that can get to 40 to 50 feet or more, does best in full sun and regular irrigation
- Does great near water, can develop "knees" or roots that grow in knobs out of the ground around the tree

Crape Myrtle
- Fast growing plants that need a sunny, well-drained area to thrive
- Flower colors on these range from white to reds and pinks of all shades, even purple
- Height can be from 6 to 25 feet tall, depending on the Crape

Gold Tabebuia
- "Golden Trumpet Tree"
- Fast growth to 30 feet tall in Zone 10, slower growth the more north it goes
- Brown bark and clusters of bright yellow-gold flowers in spring

Hickory
- "Pignut Hickory"
- Reaches maturity at about 30 years
- Canopy can spread 30 to 40 feet wide
- Moderate growth that gets to 50 to 65 feet tall, or up to 120 feet
- Does best in full sun.

Italian Cypress
- Reaches heights of 30 feet or more, however can be planted next to structures
- Grows at a moderate pace, cold hardy, and does well in Florida with full to part sun

Lavender Tabebuia
- "Purple Trumpet Tree"
- Moderately cold tolerant, doing best in Zone 10 and warmer areas of Zone 9B
- Smooth gray trunk and produces lavish pinkish-purple blooms in early spring
- Trimming isn't necessary unless to remove any too-low branches

Laurel Oak
- Fast growing tree that eventually reaches a height of 60 feet or more
- Canopy size can be 35 to 45 feet
- Prefers to be in full sun to partial shade
- Life span of 50 to 70 years

Live Oak
- Moderate grower to 60 feet after a person's lifetime
- Requires full sun and room to spread out, as well as a well-drained planting location
- Does well in any zone of Florida
